Yulia Arakelyan (Portland), Kathryn Hightower (Seattle), and Kimberly Kaplan (NYC) met while Dance Majors at the University of Washington. The three budding artists had early success with their first dance projects together, and couldn’t bear to part when two graduated and moved to new cities. For the past three years, they have collaborated via videos, emails, blogs, and late night phone calls, to create dance that explores “barriers” in all their forms.

July 1, 2010
It's July 1st but you wouldn't be able to tell from the weather in Portland. Rainy, chilly, cloudy, windy. Today the Long Distance Project starts our daily dance diaries: a commitment to explore, play, dance everyday...no matter how small or big, no matter how simple or complex. This is my rainy dance for today. It is a bitter sweet day. The start and end of things both good and bad.

I see both frustration and joy emerging from your rainy reaction. It makes me wonder how many times a day we feel frustrated about something, when we could actually look at it in a new way and feel joyful about it. I also love the sound of the rain falling on the camera. It sounds like a vinyl record that's reached the end of the songs but keeps spinning on the turntable. Give thanks, Yulia, you always inspire me.
